Universities urged to keep separate maintenance account

Zambian Minister of Higher Education Professor Nkandu Luo has ordered all public universities and colleges in the country to open separate bank accounts to be specifically used for maintenance as a way of enhancing accountability, reports the Lusaka Times.

Due to the numerous complaints reaching the minister’s office, it has become critical that money collected for maintenance, sports and union activities is banked separately so that in the absence of these activities, the institution must explain what they have done with a particular budget line, said Luo.

Luo made the directive after making an impromptu visit to Kitwe Trades Training Institute in Kitwe this month where she found the hostels and workshops in a dilapidated state. “It is extremely unfair and irresponsible to subject students to such a learning environment when each year students pay something towards maintenance fees to their respective institutions,” Luo said.
