New jobs site – Higher Education in Africa Recruitment

University World News is delighted to announce the ‘soft’ launch of an African higher education jobs site. Universities across Africa – and indeed those around the world – looking to recruit academics and higher education professionals are now easily able to post job ads, at very reasonable prices and reaching a large audience, on the Higher Education in Africa Recruitment, or HEAR, site. People looking for jobs may post their CVs for free.

The coming weeks will be a ‘live test’ phase for the HEAR site, which is an initiative of the Africa Edition. Higher education institutions, other organisations and individuals will be able to post jobs while the site is being streamlined and its functionality improved and finalised.

The rationale

There are numerous good reasons behind the Higher Education in Africa Recruitment initiative – and they are the same reasons why higher education institutions and stakeholders will wish to use the service.

University World News has grown rapidly since its launch in 2007, and now provides a large audience and active website for advertisers. UWN has 42,000 registered readers of the weekly emailed e-paper. Our active website attracts on average 450,000 page views a month, and some 85,000 unique visitors a month.

HEAR’s aims are to provide a low-cost, high-traffic platform for universities, colleges and organisations working in or with African higher education to place recruitment ads and search for staff on an international platform.

With African universities desperately short of academic and professional staff, and looking to recruit regionally, continentally and internationally, the time is ripe for a continent-wide academic jobs portal as the primary platform to place and search for university jobs.

It is expensive to advertise internationally, and African higher education institutions and systems are cash-strapped. Also, African job ads get lost amid the deluge of listings on global higher education job sites.

HEAR provides a low-cost job site dedicated to African higher education – it will become the ‘go to’ platform for recruiters to reach an African and global higher education audience, and for job-seekers to showcase their CVs.

HEAR is the first – and we aim to make it the premier – job site for African higher education.

University World News also has a lofty ambition: to change the paradigm of African higher education, from a sector that people flee, to one on the rise – like Africa itself – brimming with opportunities and seeking high-level staff.

Another goal is to attract African academics, PhD students and professionals in the diaspora back to the continent through HEAR and a targeted campaign that matches jobs and visiting lectureships with Africans in higher education in destination countries.
