VIETNAM: Universities want more autonomy
Education experts have asked the Ministry of Education and Training to create conditions for universities to have more autonomy in making decisions regarding administration, recruitment and enrolment quotas, reports Viet Nam News. These tasks should not be the responsibility of the ministry, according to Associate Professor Dao Cong Tien, former rector of the University of Economics, who spoke at a workshop on education reform at the institution. Only by having more autonomy could universities make better decisions, according to Tien. The ministry should also not dictate the enrolment quota for each university, he said, adding that this should be based on facilities and lecturers.
However, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga said that administrative and enrolment autonomy could not be given to all universities throughout the country. It was necessary to maintain some control in order to ensure the quality of training at the tertiary level, he added.
