WALES: More universities 'at risk' - Review

The number of universities in Wales at 'moderate risk' of collapse has risen in the past year. An Institutional Risk Review unearthed long-term sustainability issues with seven of the nation's 10 campus-based universities, writes Gareth Evans for Wales Online.

The most recent classification, correct to May 2011, deemed three unnamed institutions at 'low risk' and no Welsh university at 'high risk' of closure. But the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), which carries out the assessment, said no university faced threats to its short- to medium-term sustainability.

The review is conducted twice a year by HEFCW, which makes one overall judgement based on the review's findings. In last year's analysis, six universities were considered low risk and just five were considered moderate risk.
