AUSTRALIA: Racism 'rife' in universities, study finds

Accusations of alcoholism, jibes about skin colour and being overlooked for promotion are all forms of discrimination indigenous staff continue to face in Australian universities, a new study has found, writes Jen Rosenberg for The Sydney Morning Herald.

More than 70% of those surveyed had experienced direct discrimination and racist attitudes in the workplace, and more than half had experienced "lateral violence" at the hands of indigenous colleagues, yet less than 20% said their employer had taken positive action to address the issues.

The results of the study were published last week in I'm not racist but...Report on cultural respect, racial discrimination, lateral violence and related policy at Australia's universities.
