INDIA: 'Unfit' universities may revert to colleges
With the committee of experts appointed by the Supreme Court categorising 44 'deemed' universities, 16 from Tamil Nadu, as unfit to be universities, they are likely to revert to functioning as affiliated colleges, writes B Aravind Kumar for The Hindu. The unprecedented expansion of deemed-to-be universities over the past two decades and their skewed growth limited to professional courses has led to a focus on issues of quality, performances and practices at the institutions. At present, the Supreme Court is hearing a case relating to the ambiguity in the guidelines for scrutinising applications from institutions seeking clearance to be declared 'deemed' universities, which are given greater autonomy based on high performance.
Waking up to the concerns of the public, the Ministry of Human Resources and Development constituted a committee of experts that categorised as many as 44 universities as not fit to be a university. After the managements of the institutions appealed, the Supreme Court asked the centre to appoint a committee of officers to listen to them individually. Now the committee of officers has found no reason to deviate from the conclusions drawn by the committee of experts.

It is time to end the family business in the Universities, If one cannot regulate today, they can never control these so called universities. India needs quality education or else there will be a graver crisis.
