CYPRUS: Private universities told to lower fees

The government of Cyprus has told private universities to return tuition fees to last year's levels or else risk severe sanctions, writes Elias Hazou for Cyprus Mail.

Education Minister George Demosthenous will instruct the administrations of three universities - Frederick, European University and University of Nicosia - to lower their tuition fees after they introduced hikes ranging from 3% to 6% for the 2011-12 academic year. Based on legal advice from the attorney-general's office, the ministry said the tuition hikes were illegal.

Private universities are required by law to secure the education minister's consent before raising fees.
