IRAN: Gender segregation plan for 20 universities

Twenty Iranian universities have reportedly announced that in the coming academic year, 40 departments will begin accepting either male or female students, reports Radio Zamaneh.

The Shargh daily reported that the universities of Tehran, AmirKabir, Esfahan, Mohaghegh Ardebili, Zabil, Shiraz Arts and Tabriz Sahand were among the 20 higher education institutions that would be offering certain majors only to men or to women. Sociology, history, literature, mining, arts education and mathematics are the affected areas of study.

The gender separation appears to be underway in Iranian universities despite criticism from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who recently called the proposed measures "superficial and unwise".
