NEPAL: Academics protest top appointments
The Nepali Congress-aligned Democratic Professors' Association and Unified CPN-Maoist-aligned Nepal National Professors' Organisation last week padlocked universities across the country to protest the government decision to appoint vice-chancellors, reports the Himalayan Times. The two professors' unions have demanded that the government rolls back the appointments made by Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal at seven universities.
The appointment issue has been drawn out, with political parties claiming the posts for their choice of men. The agitating professors, who have described last week's decision as "unilateral", last week padlocked the central offices of four universities. Since three of the four universities don't have any offices, the professors called for symbolic padlocking.
