SAUDI ARABIA: More female students heading abroad

Around 17% of the estimated 80,000 Saudi students studying under the King Abdullah Foreign Scholarship Programme are women, according to the Ministry of Higher Education, which also estimated that the number of students would increase to 140,000 in the next five years, Fatima Sidiya reports for Arab News.

The programme is available to all Saudi students who earn a high school average of 90% or higher, but women must have a Saudi male guardian with them during their studies abroad.

Countries that students are sent to include the US, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Japan and Singapore, with 30,000 studying in the US.
