ZIMBABWE: Ministry mulls recalling retired lecturers

The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education is considering plans to call back retired lecturers in a bid to address the shortage of staff at colleges as a result of the brain drain, reports Talk Zimbabwe.

In an interview last week, the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Washington Mbizvo, said it was planning to re-hire retired lecturers to fill hundreds of posts at tertiary institutions such as teachers colleges, polytechnics and universities. "Due to the intense brain drain experienced in the country, most tertiary institutions suffered when lecturers migrated looking for greener pastures," said Mbizvo.

"We are aware that our institutions are operating with limited human resources and we will be appointing retired qualified lecturers who will help improve the situation." He declined to disclose the date when the appointments would begin, saying the initiative was in the pipeline.
