INDIA: Move to improve staff training

With the aim of improving professionalism in the management of universities and colleges, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines on "training and development of academic administrators in higher education", reports The Times of India.

It is argued that quality of education has taken a toll as teachers, besides performing primary task of teaching and research, are also discharging duties as deans, proctors, provosts, exam controllers, principals, department heads.

The existing arrangement, according to the UGC, is inadequate to face the changing socio-economic and political realities. The guidelines direct institutions across the country to develop training models to equip the existing staff with modern managerial tools.
