BANGLADESH: Parliament passes private university bill
Bangladesh's parliament last weekend passed a bill providing detailed rules for establishing private universities, their proper management and improving education quality, reports The Financial Express.Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid moved the Private University Bill 2010 which was adopted, abolishing the Private University Bill 1992. The minister said the new law was necessary to ensure quality education in private universities.
The government will form an independent National Accreditation Council to look into implementing the law. The government will be able to disallow the construction of any institution or campus that it deems is against the interests of environment protection, security and public interests, it said. Private universities will have to be open to all people irrespective of caste, creed, colour or gender as well as for the physically disabled.
