INDIA: Green light for two more universities

Two universities will be set up in Karnataka state after Governor Rameshwar Thakur, who is the chancellor of universities, gave the green light, reports the Times of India. He cleared an ordinance to this effect last weekend, according to higher education department officials.

He had received draft ordinances sent by the government to start an agriculture university in Raichur and a horticulture university in Bagalkot. The aim of the horticulture university is to promote research in the field and allied science. The agriculture university will teach students in rural areas to use scientific methods in farming and related activities. Currently, Karnataka has two agricultural universities in Bangalore and Dharwad.

The ordinance will be passed when legislation is not in session, but it must be approved in six months.
