KENYA: Universities get funding boost for expansion
Kenya's government has set aside a billion Shilling (US$16 million) for the expansion of public universities, Assistant Minister of Higher Education Dr Kilemi Mwiria has said, reports The Nation. He added that the money, which has already been factored into this year's budget, will be used to expand the institutions of higher learning countrywide."We want to ensure that all students who qualify for university entry are admitted," Dr Mwiria said during the inauguration of the new Thika-based Mount Kenya University, which will offer science and technology courses. "By 2012, the public universities should be able to absorb 5,000 to 10,000 more new students yearly in order to contain the high number of those who miss out."
